Academic English

Courses are designed for students who wish to progress on to other courses at College or University, such as A levels or a degree. These courses start in Term 2 (January to April) and Term 3 (April to June). Beginner and Elementary level students cannot join this course.

Academic English courses provide:

  • When you arrive, your English will be tested and you will then join a group working at your level.
  • You will study in mixed nationality groups with experienced and well-qualified teachers. Last year we had students from over 30 countries in the English Language Centre.

You will study:

  • Either up to 23 hours of provision a week, including 17 hours of classroom contact
  • or up to 26 hours a week of provision a week, including 20 hours of classroom contact
  • You will follow an 8-hour General English core programme with a choice of additional Special Study modules (9 or 12 hours depending on the course chosen). These may be made up of Academic Special Study modules such as Academic Writing, Academic Speaking, Academic Reading and Note Taking, Study Skills, IELTS preparation. We will also advise you to follow Special Study options from the General English list depending on your needs, and work towards recognised English Language examinations

English Plus Foundation Courses

English Plus Foundation courses are only available for one full academic year, from April to April or September to June.

You will study up to 17 hours per week of English and join Vocational modules in selected subjects in groups with British students. You need at least an intermediate level of English to join the vocational modules.

  • Business
  • Travel and Tourism
  • Hotel and Catering
  • Sports and Leisure
  • Music Technology
  • Beauty Therapy
  • Information Technology

General English Courses

Students can study General English for:

  • up to 23 hours of provision a week, including 17 hours of classroom contact
  • or up to 26 hours a week of provision a week, including 20 hours of classroom contact

Pre-sessional Summer School

The Pre-Sessional Academic English Summer School offers you:

  • 4 weeks of classes totalling 68 hours of tuition (9.30am – 12.30pm, Monday to Friday plus 2 afternoons per week, College will be closed for bank holidays 27th and 28th August 2007).
  • classes at different levels from intermediate to advanced, Academic English, grammar and vocabulary sessions and reading, listening, writing and speaking skills work.
  • On your free afternoons, if you wish, you may use resources such as computers, videos, cassettes and satellite TV in our self-study languages centre, computer centre and library all at no extra cost.
  • We will also offer a cultural and social programme if there is sufficient interest. All activities will be optional and there will be a small charge for each.

General English Summer School

Our well-established Summer School offers you an interesting study programme with an additional choice of cultural, social and sporting activities at a small extra cost. The General English Summer School offers you:

  • 15 hours of tuition per week (9.30 – 12.30, Monday to Friday)
  • classes at different levels from elementary to advanced (please note we cannot accept complete beginners on the Summer School)
  • grammar and vocabulary sessions
  • reading, listening, writing and speaking skills work
  • In the afternoons, if you wish, you may use resources such as computers, videos, cassettes and satellite TV in our self-study languages centre, computer centre and library all at no extra cost.
  • There will also normally be two or three social or cultural events per week, in the afternoons Monday to Friday and all-day excursions at the weekend. There will be a small charge for the activities that you choose. All activities are optional.
